On 3 July 1865, a Freedmen's Bureau officer ordered one Geo. Evans to “immediately deliver to Buck Gilman his daughter Carolina.”1 The 1870 census, the first to name the formerly enslaved, records Carolina in the Gilman household in the same county.2
